food independence is only the beginning of what I want to accomplish. Knowing where my food comes from and how it is raised is very important to ensure maximal health and vitality. Raising it myself gives me a sense of accomplishment and independence. I have long enjoyed gardening and eating from my garden!

Thanks for the chance to win! I am so inspired by the work that you do for food justice and I share your resources all the time! We had a great year so far and now comes our fall crops! I really appreciate your slow to bolt lettuce varieties and that Spicy Mustard mix, Hotshot! We also planted Detroit red beets in containers and they were and are THE bomb!

We've started gardening as a way of providing more flavorful and nutritious vegetables for our family. Our kids are more interested in eating veggies they've grown themselves. It's a great way to teach them how to work and about where food comes from while broadening their vegetable horizons! They love the planting and picking parts, but we're still working on the weeding!

We live where half the year is cold and snowy... and we're picky about our food so we try to grow as much as we can and buy responsibly. Season extension is very important for us as we try to grow greens as long as possible. We would LOVE to put this gift to work!

I am a Horticulture teacher at a vocational school for students with special needs and we look for any opportunities and resources to extend the growing season so that the students can have more time interacting with the gardens. The majority of our growing and harvesting season takes place over the summer and the students do not get to see the fruits of their labor.

The newsletter from High Mowing provides excellent tips to help us keep our gardens looking beautiful. We mostly used High mowing seeds in our gardens and our gardens are flourishing.

At our school, we've been growing several varieties of tomatoes. The students there have laughed at their peculiar shapes and sizes (especially the odd looking malformations), but when they indulged in them it wasn't long until they became obsessed.

I'm so thankful there are people out there, such as the dandy folks at High Mowing Seed, who are saving the history of agriculture though selected seeds. Otherwise, these kiddos wouldn't have been exposed to such variety at a young age.

Food independence is important to our family of six because while right now we have a steady paycheck, we might not always. Plus providing for ourselves provides us the freedom to use our dollars to support things and people we believe in.

I always enjoy the posts from High Mowing and I am always finding answers to things I didn't know. This kit would really come in handy. We have a garden that is maybe too big for us but, we are having fun with it.....anyone want zucchini? :-) I do start most of my plants from seeds and some years are better than others. The cover was just something we were discussing yesterday...potatoes are being devoured be some nasty bug!!! Good luck everyone! Happy gardening.

Many kudos to High Mowing for great newsletters and help given to all of us becoming, slowly but surely more food secure! Our Springfield Promise Neighborhood is starting from scratch to learn not only about food security, but also how to garden in the inner city where food security is most needed, but not always recognized as a need by many living there. For the first time since its inception, SPN will have a functional greenhouse! We will be learning so much about seed starting, season extension and production in a greenhouse environment. We have 13 acres set deep in the mountains. The winters can be very harsh here, and the nearest real grocery store is a 2 hour drive for us. We stock up on things we can, and grow what we can all summer. This would give us a great opportunity to extend our growing season, and help us sustain ourselves in the harsh winter months.

Together with the students, we have started a garden at our middle school in New Hampshire. The students are out of school for the majority of the growing season, and extending the season is a great way for us to have the kids get to participate in more of the process from planting to harvest. They love to eat the products of their hard work!

Living at 10,000 feet in the Colorado Rockies, I work hard to grow our own food, organic & non GMO. I have 3 covered raised (3 feet) gardens. This year they are covered with a 2x4 wood frame so I can stand up inside. Then covered with black screen guaranteed for 10 years for hail & hurricane force winds. We have very high UV Rays so plants burn easily. Would love to extend our growing season as we cannot plant until after Mother's Day & only have until early Sept. to get things fully grown & ripe. Would appreciate any help with the heat loving vegetables. Cannot attempt fruit as it attracts bears. The gardens are 3' high because we only have rocks. Everything has to be grown above ground. Had to buy the dirt. This week we picked baby kale, chard, leaf lettuce, spinach & radish. Sure is good. Would love to try row covers inside these three gardens & maybe the tomatoes & peppers would have a chance to ripen & get bigger.

Lost a lot of my garden to too much rain and wet soil. Have been replanting (buying what I can find which is not organic.) Looking at your web site and think this would be an awesome opportunity to buoy my spirits!

We've had a good growing season here in Arkansas. Wetter and cooler than normal. Heat is just arriving along with the bugs. The floating row covers would have been great. Fall garden is being planned sure could use them row covers now. Arkansas has bugs. Looking forward to garden fresh food till winter. Then start planning for next year. Have had great results with HMSeed.

I dream of being self- sustaining for as much of the year as possible. I live in an apartment and am gardening with neighbors who are new to growing a vegetable garden. We're in central CT in a yard that is sunny all day. We've got 2 raised beds 4x8x12 that have been densely planted with organic vegetables, herbs; some from seedlings, some from seed. I swear we've grown at least 1 batch of baby rabbits as well even tho we've got a "rabbit proof fence". I'd love to extend the growing season with any of the items being offered as gifts particularly the covers to extend the growing season. Gratefully, Diana

I have decided I want to know exactly where my family's food is coming from and how it has been grown. What better way to do that than to grow my own? We also are starting to wonder why we are spending so much time and money on grass that we hate, when we could replace it with garden, which we love.

We grow a wide variety of vegetables, many of the seeds we use come from High Mowing, as we like organic and non-mutated things! We also keep bees and make our meals from scratch. It seems only logical! This year, we are looking forward to planting another round of cooler weather crops. Kale quiche in February sounds perfect!

I garden for my health and the heath of my family. It is my therapy, my happy place, and the source of unprocessed calories that keep us fed all year round. This spring, my mom passed away, and I was too busy to plant my usual big garden, only tomatoes, carrots, cucumber, and herbs made it into the ground from the dozens of seeds I had started. I am very much looking forward to my fall to make up for all of the greens I missed earlier in the season. And there's nothing better than going into your back yard, grabbing a bowl full of different kinds of lettuce, and eating a better salad than any restaurant could ever put together!

Food independence is important to me because it helps me provide my family and others with food that is grown organically and isn't genetically modified. Even though we have a lot of grocery stores locally that have a good variety of organic food, home grown / locally grown is so much better! I want extend my growing season so that I can have fresh home grown food for longer.

1/4 acre of what used to be our lawn is now a community garden! We grow everything together, in contrast with the bed-per-person model. A lot of our food started out as High Mowing seeds.

Prices for organic produce have gone up in my area. Starting a winter garden would really help us cut costs on our produce bill. My children also love to garden. They would love to plant more carrots and broccoli!

Food independence is important to me because I like knowing exactly what is, and is not, going into my food. With a little one at home and another on the way, this issue is more pressing to me each day.

It's getting to be a scary world with all of the terrible things that are going into food these days. I just had a baby girl and only want to give her the best food that is available. Unfortunately you can't trust much of what is in the grocery store. I would love to be able to grow all of my food year round so I know what our family is eating.

Living in Texas, we have rotation seasons. I have an organic garden for me as I have multi-chemical sensitivity and it is very hard to find truly organic food here. I eat anything that is not organic and I have a neurological or cardiovascular response to it. (My muscles twitch and/or I have heart palpitations) We have little money as I have been very sick and on a lot of supplements. Winning this contest would help us so much with planting what we need and giving us tools to heal it grow for the winter and be able to store some of it.

There's nothing like eating fruits and vegetables that are coming straight from your home! I just started my garden at home and I've never been happier and veggies have never tasted so good. This year is our first using cold-frames to extend the season...it has been so cool and wet in Michigan that things are not growing well. So we are taking the time to get garden boxes equipped with hoops to plant fall foods and lettuce. I just harvested the "music" garlic we bought from you last fall! It was a resounding success!

I have been organic gardening for over 20 years. This year I have started to build my own seed bank. I want to always be able to grow my own garden on my own terms with organic, open pollinated seeds. Living in A very cold climate with a short season it would be great to add a few weeks to my growing season. Growing our own vegetables is the best skill we can have. As a mom of a toddler, I want my daughter to learn right from the get go how important food is to our lives. I want her to know that veggies taste just as good, if not better, than the empty calorie snacks that fill young people's after school hours. I want her to find power in growing and harvesting food for her family and to know that she can live through the work of her hands and sweat on her brow and not the just the dollar in her pocket.

we have been dreaming and workin pg toward a self-sustaining, permaculture lifestyle for almost a decade. 3 kids later, we FINALLY moved into our own little homestead a few weeks ago, and are diligently using all the knowledge we have been gathering while waiting.

We would love to have the tools and advice needed to have our first winter garden here, and this set would be such a help. Thanks for the opportunity.

For me, living in a warmer climate, it less about protection from cold and more about protection from the heat, and of course anything looking to eat my veggies. Having just moved, I need to restart my whole garden, and I'll be starting mid-summer. Hopefully, a kit like this will help get my at-home food supply started.

  I live in Zone 5 and after reading The Four Season Gardener (several times) and The Four Season Gardener's Farm Cookbook I'm inspired to extend my season so I can harvest something through winter and have something to look forward to eating in the Spring. I hate the thought of eating produce shipped from hundreds or more likely - thousand's of miles away.
