Encino lettuce.
The green Bibb-type Mirlo and the red leaf New Red Fire, both early producers with modern downy mildew resistances, perform well through springtime’s cool and wet conditions. For bridging the gap between spring and summer try Encino, a slow-to-bolt and tip burn tolerant buttery green oak leaf.
When the heat gets too intense for most lettuces our growers turn to the versatile summer crisps Lovelock and Nevada which stand up to the heat and never skimp on flavor. In the warmest southern regions, extreme bolt and heat tolerance, resistance to tip burn and strategic planting in areas with some shade proves to yield the best results in summer’s hottest temps. With diligent cultivation, the green romaines Coastal Star (peeling back the outer leaves will yield uniform, dense hearts) and Jericho (known to keep its flavor through hot days) can produce crisp heads even in intense heat.
Newham romaine lettuce.
For efficiency with late fall plantings, try mini and midi romaine-types: the reds, Rhazes and Breen pair nicely with the green Newham and they all respond well to dense plantings at 6”, optimizing space and yield. Transplant into a covered, unheated growing space and gain a fresh, tender crop of lettuce just in time for Thanksgiving.
Pomegranate Crunch mini lettuces.
Farmer Mike Lind of Driftless Organics in Soldiers Grove, WI, reports that the mini red romaine Pomegranate Crunch is “by far the most consistent lettuce we grow, producing upwards of 90% marketable heads with beautiful color and shape that perform just as well in the field as in the hoop house.” We recommend pairing plantings with the green romaine Spretnak for a beautiful selection of teenage heads.
