Trialing True Potato Seed
In the High Mowing Organic Seeds' trials field, we spend our time trialing and evaluating varieties to determine how they perform compared with each other, as well as to gain knowledge about their characteristics to determine whether we would like to carry a new variety.
In addition to this, we often do custom trials for other growers or organizations. One of the exciting trials that we conducted this past summer was for True Potato Seed (TPS), which is potato plants grown from seed, not from tubers. One of our seed vendors, Bejo Seeds, Inc., has a potato breeder who has been researching and trialing TPS for over 20 years. They asked us to do the first organic trial of these potatoes grown from seed, simply to see if it was even possible to grown in organic conditions. It was successful!
Working on this trial has provided us with valuable information for possible future cultivation of organic true potato seeds - how nice would it be to receive a packet of true potato seeds in the mail instead of a big bulky bag of seed potatoes? Stay tuned for further developments in our True Potato Seed trials!
Check out what the trial looked like along the way:

By the way, I grew some spuds from Tom Wagner's varieties and they were amazing. Great production, interesting shapes, and as a bonus, the plants produced a ton of viable berries.
As true potato seeds are much less likely to carry disease, especially late blight, we need increased interest by home growers and research by the big players. This could have a significant impact on world food production. Well-grown, high-protein potato varieties are much more nutritionally valuable than the recent spud-smearing would have you believe.

Thank you all for your interest! I would like to reiterate that this trial was a part of our Trial Farm, where we test varieties and crops to see how they do. High Mowing conducted this trial for Bejo Seeds, Inc. to see if it was even possible to have a successful crop grown in organic conditions. Adding varieties to our catalog is a multi-year process. In the case of these potatoes, there is much more to be researched before we would consider offering them. At this time we do not have True Potato Seed available, and are not in a position to offer it anytime in the near future.
Growing potatoes for seed can be very difficult, so we are excited to be a part of a project where we can explore the possibilities of what offering such a product could do for organic farmers and gardeners. Thank you for your interest. In the meantime, we really encourage you all to try to grow them yourself! -Kathryn
these potatoes from seeds seems wonderful.
how long time it takes from seeds to have true potatoes ?

If anyone has any questions about TPS and wants to join a forum devoted largely to potatoes grown from true seed just go http://tatermater.proboards.com
Hard to believe even to myself...but I am in my seventh decades of breeding potatoes and would be happy to help your customers about any nuance of getting the most from TPS. Even after producing TPS from tens of thousands of varieties of potato clones...I never get bored with the color, flavor, and history of potatoes.
I saw "The Botany of Desire" on PBS the other night. As a result, I decided that this spring I will plant more than one variety of each type of vegetable in my garden and save seeds as back up each year. Gardening is such an endless topic. There will always be something new to learn.
