FAQ's About Sales Tax Collection and Exemption
WHY DO YOU COLLECT SALES TAX?
As of a Supreme Court ruling on June 21, 2018, internet companies are now required to comply with state tax regulations for the collection and remission of sales tax. In order to comply with this ruling, High Mowing Organic Seeds started collecting sales tax in all states that require tax remittance on January 23, 2019. Prior to this new law, High Mowing only collected sales tax in the state of Vermont, where our business is located.
DO YOU COLLECT SALES TAX ON ALL OF YOUR PRODUCTS?
Individual sales tax laws vary from state to state. High Mowing charges sales tax on taxable items according to individual state and local tax laws.
HOW IS SALES TAX CALCULATED?
The amount of sales tax charged is determined by several factors, including the product purchased, the destination of the order, and the location from which the order is shipped.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY FARM OPERATION QUALIFIES FOR MAKING TAX-EXEMPT PURCHASES?
If your state charges sales tax, the state government is responsible for maintaining an agency that administers its sales tax system. This agency has the authority to issue sales tax exemptions to qualified businesses. If you operate a commercial farm business, you may qualify to make tax-exempt purchases. For more information about tax exemption requirements, please visit your state’s Department of Revenue website. If you qualify for tax exemption, you will be required to fill out an exemption certificate in order to place orders without being charged sales tax.
HOW TO I OBTAIN AN EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE?
If you are able to confirm a tax-exempt status for your farm business, you will need to acquire a sales tax exemption certificate. This document will enable you to make tax-free purchases that would otherwise be subject to state sales tax. A completed version of this document must be submitted to High Mowing for tax exemption status to be applied to any orders. For more information about tax exemption requirements, please visit your state’s Department of Revenue website. If you were an existing High Mowing customer prior to January 1, 2019, you should have received a generic certificate from us via email. If you did not receive an email from us, or would like us to resend the certificate, please contact questions@highmowingseeds.com. You may also obtain a certificate by contacting your state tax authority at the Department of Revenue.
HOW DO I OBTAIN A RESALE CERTIFICATE OR SELLER’S PERMIT?
A resale certificate or seller’s permit is a document that proves tax-exempt status for businesses that purchase goods they intend to resell. The form includes a statement that indicates that the business will not use the products for personal use before reselling them. This form qualifies a reseller for tax exemption, and will enable you to make tax-free purchases from our seed rack program. A completed version of this document must be submitted to High Mowing for tax exemption status to be applied to any orders. For more information about tax exemption requirements, or to request a certificate, please visit your state’s Department of Revenue website.
